Five Benefits of Blackout Curtains

1. Darkness Helps Release Melatonin

Surely you’ve heard about the sleep hormone, melatonin.

Did you know we automatically produce melatonin given the right conditions?

Darkness signals to the pineal gland to start producing melatonin. When we are in darkness, melatonin sends signals to the brain that it’s time for sleep.

Being exposed to light at night can actually block melatonin production, which is why blackout curtains are so important.

Babies and toddlers thrive off a bedtime between 6 and 8 pm. It’s often still light outside during those hours so blackout curtains can help create darkness, even if artificially.

2. Prevent Early Morning Wake Ups

If your baby is waking up too early in the morning, the first thing to check is how dark the room is. Babies and toddlers have zero concept of time.

If they’re sound asleep but see a little bit of light coming through their room as the sun rises, they think it’s time to wake up and play!

Since they’ve already slept for 8 or more hours, they sometimes don’t have enough sleep pressure to fall back asleep after these early morning wake ups.

The Sleepout Curtain is made with 100% blackout fabric and comes with pads to block light bleeds, making sure no light can get in.

You can rest assured that your baby or toddler’s room will be completely dark, meaning they’ll sleep through any amount of light that tries to come through and wake them up.

3. Keeps Baby from Being Overstimulated

The whole world is new to our babies and oh so exciting for our toddlers!

If your baby sleeps in a well-lit room, they may want to look around at everything and can quickly become overstimulated.

This will become more common as your baby grows and develops and hits common sleep regressions as they learn new skills!

Darkness helps to provide a calm environment so your baby can rest in their sleep space calmly. Even if they aren’t asleep the entire time, lying down in a dark space can be restful to our little ones.

4. Provides Temperature Control

As a new mom I was obsessed with how to dress my baby for sleep safely.

I would wake up in the middle of the night worried that she was too hot or too cold.

I drove my husband crazy messing with our brightly-lit thermostat pad in the wee hours of the morning.

The Sleepout Curtain is thermal insulating, meaning it helps keep the heat in when it’s cold outside so you can stop stressing if your baby is too cold or too hot.

5. Longevity

I get it.

You don’t want to buy yet another baby product.

So many baby products are only useful for about the first 3 or 6 months of your baby’s life and then it’s off to a closet to keep for baby number two.

That is not the case with blackout curtains.

Babies and toddlers will almost always choose to interact with their environment over sleeping. My daughter is 4 and we still have her blackout curtains hanging up to prevent those early morning wake ups.

A good pair of blackout curtains will be used for several years. The Sleepout Curtain is also portable, so you can hang it in your baby’s nursery and easily take it with you when you travel.

The Sleepout curtain can be installed horizontally or vertically, and is modular so it can adjust to fit smaller windows. The ease and functionality of it make it one my baby travel essentials for sleep!
