I researched my baby registry at great lengths and added only those items that I would use again and again.

I was also careful to research what items not to add to a baby registry. And I omitted all of those from mine as well.

I was incredibly blessed to get so many gifts at my baby shower. And I was sure that I had thought of everything:

  • Carseats
  • Cute diaper bag
  • Stroller
  • Hands-free bra for breast pumping milk
  • Breast milk bags for milk storage
  • That weird snot sucker thing everyone raves about
  • And even nail clippers

But as an expecting mom, there was only so much I knew.

Whether you’re a first-time mom, or are making a baby registry for your second baby, here are some of the most forgotten and overlooked baby items that you should consider adding to your registry.

I polled new and experienced parents and these are the top items that they forgot to add to their registry (and ended up buying them on their own later).

Overlooked Baby Registry Items

Travel Sound Machine

Lots of people add a sound machine to their registry, but many forget about adding a travel sound machine!

I used to clip my travel sound machine to my stroller and use it for naps on the go.

They are super portable and relatively inexpensive, so they make a great baby shower gift!

Bath Kneeler

When I was pregnant, it was hard to imagine bathing my newborn in anything but the sink. But, they quickly outgrow the sink and move to the large bathtub.

I was right there on the ground next to my baby and very uncomfortable! Tile floors are NOT kind to the knees!

I love this bath kneeler — it’s cushy and has a handy strap to hang it up to dry (babies are splashy).

SlumberPod

The SlumberPod is AMAZING and I wish I had one when my daughter was younger.

It’s a blackout privacy pod that goes over a pack and play or travel crib to create privacy and darkness.

I was always nervous to travel when my daughter was so young, but this would have helped and given me some sense of peace.

You can also use this when you’re visiting grandma’s house to keep your baby on track with naps or even as a way to make the nursery dark at home.

Baby Thermometer

I didn’t need a baby thermometer until I NEEDED a thermometer.

That first fever baby spikes can be scary. Having a way to double check them can be so helpful. This thermometer is a 3-in-1 and gives a read-out in less than a second.

Baby Medicine

My baby had an ear infection around 7 months and the pediatrician recommended Tylenol. I was so glad my cousin gifted me some Tylenol to have on hand.

While acetaminophen isn’t the cutest baby shower gift, it is one that you’ll be very thankful for when the time comes.

Cool Mist Humidifier

I love my cool mist humidifier and still use it 7 years after my baby shower. This is great when my baby had a stuffy nose and I wanted to help her sleep. Sometimes I use it too. 😉

Bathtub Mat

This bathtub mat keeps babies from slip-sliding around once they move to the big tub (babies are slippery).

it has suction cups that stick to the bottom of the tub and covers most of the bottom of my bathtub, so it keeps my little one a little safer.

Haakaa

If you’re planning to breastfeed, make sure you have at least one Haakaa on your baby registry.

It’s a manual breast pump that can collect milk on one side while you’re feeding on the other. It’s also portable enough to take with you on the go.

Nipple Cream

I don’t think I ever would have added nipple cream to my registry, but I had so many friends who had gone before me, so they knew to buy it anyway. I was glad to have it on hand when I needed it!

Clothes in Larger Sizes

If you’re registering for baby clothes, make sure to throw some larger sizes on there.

People gave me plenty of adorable newborn outfits, but my daughter outgrew those so quickly. Add 6 month, 9 month, and even 12 month clothes to your registry if you’re in need of baby clothes.

Baby Placemat

Before I knew it, it was time to start feeding my baby solid foods! This placemat is so great, especially if you’re into baby led weaning. (I love it and write about the benefits of Baby-Led Weaning.)

It’s easy to make your registry newborn-centric, but in just a few short months new milestones like feeding hit!

Baby Carrier

It was hard to know how much I would actually babywear when I was pregnant, so I wasn’t sure if I should register for a baby carrier. They can be pretty pricey, and I didn’t know how much I would enjoy wearing her.

But baby carriers were another item that my friends said they wish they’d put on their registry.

A baby carrier is amazing for getting in a contact nap. walking a cranky baby to sleep, for taking a nice walk or hike, or doing some shopping without having to drag a carseat into a store.

It’s also a great travel item and one of my recommended baby travel essentials to help you be arms free at the airport.

(And a tip — if baby doesn’t like the carrier at first, just keep trying. It took a while for me to get used to them, but given some time most babies love being carried.)

Stroller Cover

Protect your baby from the elements with a stroller cover.

This is great to have in case of wind or rain.

Hatch Rest

The Hatch is now my go-to gift when I get invited to a baby shower because it’s so versatile.

As a new mom, I used it for the soft light during those middle of the night feeds. It also doubles as a sound machine.

Then, when my baby grew, we were able to use it as a nightlight and okay to wake clock.

It’s 7 years later and I still use my Hatch or Hatch Rest every night in my daughter’s room.

Baby Brezza

I try to have a somewhat minimalist baby registry, and don’t tend to love gadgets. But this one is so great for formula feeding babies.

It’s basically a Keurig for formula.

Put the formula in the top, fill the reservoir on the side with water, and in less than 10 seconds the Baby Brezza spits out a warm, mixed bottle.

It sounds like a luxury, but seriously, it was an absolute lifesaver for an all-formula fed baby.

Are there any other items I forgot to add? Creating a baby registry can be so daunting but outsourcing what others have added can be so helpful!
